Business was booming for U.S. arms exporters in 2015, according to a new report from the Congressional Research Service that shows the U.S. last year accounted for more than half of all arms transfer agreements worldwide.
The study – published last week and written by Catherine Theohary, an information operations and national security specialist at the legislature’s nonpartisan research outfit – paints the picture of a domestic weapons export industry that maintained sizable market share in 2015 even as arms trading declined globally.
International arms transfer agreements – defined as the “total values of conventional arms orders [made in a given year], which include all categories of weapons and ammunition, military spare parts, military construction, military assistance and training programs and all associated services” – clocked in just shy of $80 billion last year.
